It’s fantasy to think secure “next gen” authentication will be driven by technical bits and bytes alone. While brilliant technology and standards are essential to passwordless authentication, modern multi-factor authentication, continuous authentication, frictionless account recovery, and so on, the blind spot in the IAM and authentication space has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with the human side of the screen and customer experience (CX).

Because the mental model of passwords has been passed down from one generation to the next three times, our industry is having a hard time changing people’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior towards new sign-on methods. Our industry is woefully unprepared to see the blind spot and change the generational behavior of passwords.
