Biometrics – Mature Technology for Trustable Strong Authenticators

FIDO has long recognized the power of biometric technology to help accomplish its mission to eliminate passwords. In 2022, FIDO emphasized the importance of biometrics by promoting the biometrics group to a full working group. The working group is working on a number of important issues, including harmonization and influencing ISO standards for biometric performance and PAD testing, support for more accessible and stronger multimodal authenticators, and reducing the cost and time barriers of laboratory certification, and keeping up with industry’s needs with respect to presentation attacks. This talk will give an overview of the power of biometrics, recent improvements in our certification approach, improved trust that can be expected from external certification, and biometric issues we are addressing going forwards.
