The Revised eIDAS Regulation and Standardization of the EU Digital Wallet

Oct 20, 2021

Session Details

In June 2021, the EU Commission announced its plans for a revised eIDAS regulation. eIDAS (electronic IDentification, Authentication and trust Services) is the EU regulation 910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services in the EU. The most significant improvement in the revised eIDAS regulation is the EU digital identity wallet, which will be made available to all EU citizens.

The FIDO Alliance has taken an active role in the eIDAS revision and contributed to several expert surveys with comments and suggestions for enhancements, which have also been incorporated in the revised eIDAS legislation.

The FIDO Alliance worked in 2020 with the EU Cybersecurity Agency (ENISA) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to get FIDO recognized as an eIDAS compliant eID scheme in their reports on remote identity proofing.

Furthermore,  the FIDO Alliance has created a task force to work with the EU standardization bodies to participate in the standardization of the new EU digital identity wallet.

In this session, you will learn how the EU Commission and related agencies specify the eIDAS regulations and standards. We will also present how the FIDO Alliance cooperates with those EU agencies and standardization bodies.
